Upcoming 2020 Releases

We look at a few games coming in 2020 from family board game companies Blue Orange Games, Gamewright Games, and HABA.

With the New York Toy Fair upon us and U.S. based board game companies, especially those that focus on children and family games, release info on some of there upcoming 2020 games. We sifted through the new info and wanted to share with our readers the ones that stood out to us. We narrowed our choices to three companies that are known for their quality children and family board games – Blue Orange Games, Gamewright, and HABA. Here are the 2020 highlights we picked out of what’s been announced thus far:

Blue Orange Games

  • Animix | 2-6 players | Ages 8+ | Spring Release

Score the most points with the right mix of animals! Animix is a set collection game with beautiful, modern illustrations. Animals you collect score points based on the animals left in the center of the table at the end of play. Each animal scores points differently, so plan ahead to collect the perfect mix to win the game!

  • Piece of Pie | 2-4 players | Ages 8+ | Spring Release

It’s time to piece together the perfect pie! Piece of Pie is a deliciously themed drafting game. Each turn, you take one of the available pieces and add it to your personal pie. Follow the recipe cards to earn the most points possible. Pick the pieces that match the featured recipes on display… and don’t forget the decorations!

  • Fish Club | 2 players | Ages 5+ | Spring Release

Fish Club is a two player abstract strategy game with a modern twist. On your turn, choose one of your fish and drop it in the tank. Try your best to make it land next to the other fish in your color. The first player to connect 5 of their fish together wins the game.

Fish Club is designed by David Wexler, whose father, Howard Wexler, was the inventor of Connect Four. 

  • Cupcake Academy | 2-4 players | Ages 8+ | Spring Release

Cupcake Academy is a cooperative game of logic and speed. Work together with your fellow pastry chefs to organize your kitchen based on your instructor’s assignments. Each assignment wants your cupcake cups to be arranged in a specific layout in the kitchen, so you must quickly move the cups to empty plates or on top of smaller cups, one at a time, before time runs out!

  • Rip Off | 2-6 players | 8 & Up | Spring Release

You’ve got just one bill to cover all your expenses! Rip Off is an innovative game of visual perception unlike anything you’ve played before. Each turn you will physically rip off a piece off your fake bill to literally cover the objects you want to buy. Make sure the pieces you rip off are just the right size! The more you rip off now, the less you will have to cover future expenses. The player with the biggest bill remaining at the end is the winner!

Other games of note are: 

  • Save the Dragon – a roll and move with dragons and boulders for ages 5+
  • Bye Bye Mr. Fox. for ages 5+ designed by the creators of Where’s Mr. Wolf
  • Cross Clues – a party co-op game for 2-6 people, ages 7+

The above games (and more not listed) will be released in the Spring. Blue Orange Games also notes “Blue Orange will be releasing four more unannounced games later in the year, at Gen Con in Indianapolis on July 30, 2020. These new games will include a new release from Bruno Cathala in the Kingdomino collection, and a new concept from Phil Walker-Harding, the inventor of Sushi Go, and new content for Photosynthesis. Stay tuned for more details!”


  • Shifting Stones | 2-5 Players | Ages 8+ | Spring Release

Leave no stone unturned! Nine mystical tiles lie before you in a grid of rocky ruins. Rearrange the tiles to match one or more of the patterns in your hand. The catch is that you must sacrifice a card every time you swap or flip a tile. Carve out the most points and your victory is set in stone!

  •  Metro X | 1-6 Players | Ages 8+| Out Now

X marks the stops! Flip a card, choose a subway line, and cross off the given number of stops on your map. Earn bonuses for making transfers, but lose points for incomplete tracks. Everyone plays at the same time, so there’s never a dull moment as you race to complete routes. Get the highest score and become an underground sensation!

  • Qwixx Card Game | 2-5 Players | Ages 8+ | Out Now

The best-selling family dice game returns with a wild new deal! Play your hand to cross off numbers in a row. The more cards you can play, the more numbers you cross off. With no downtime between turns you’ll have a chance to gain from every flip of the cards. Score the most points and become a Qwixx Card Game ace!

  • Abandon All Artichokes | 2-4 Players | Ages 10+ | Spring Release

This isn’t your garden-variety card game! A bumper-crop of prickly produce has overtaken your patch, and there’s only one choice: abandon all artichokes!  Prune your deck by harvesting fresh vegetables, each with a special power that lets you swap, discard, or compost cards. You’ll need luck, strategy, and a green thumb to grow a winning hand!

  • Marshmallow Test | 2-5 Players | Ages 10+ | Spring Release

It’s a tricky-sticky situation: a game that rewards patience, but only for so long… Win tricks by playing the highest card in the established color. The longer you wait to go out, the more points you score. But don’t delay too long or else you get nothing! Find the sweet spot and victory is your ultimate prize!


  • Hedgehog Haberdash | 2-4 Players | Ages 3+ | Spring Release

Compete to be the first to finish decorating your hedgehog with their favorite color. Take turns drawing leaves out of the leaf bag hoping to find the color leaf you’re searching for and tuck it into your hedgehog’s fur. But the leaves have two colors and players with a strong memory will be able to take the leaves they’re looking for for themselves. Be the first to finish your hedgehog to win.

  • Color It! | 2-4 Players | Ages 4+ | Gen Con (August) Release

A roll & write for four and up! With two ways to play, you can introduce the magic of roll & write games with the whole family! With either variant, you’ll be rolling dice and competing to be the first to color in your part of Kaledio.

5er Finden | 1-4 Players | Ages 7+ 

Looking for a roll & write game with a little more brain burn? Introducing 5er Finden, a game about racing to be the first to find 5 size 5 shapes the fastest. But it doesn’t stop there! Having the most valuable shapes found after 5 rounds will win you the game.

  • Animal Upon Animal: Christmas| 2-4 Players |Ages 5+

The Animal Upon Animal universe is getting into the Christmas spirit! We’re proud to announce this special edition version of Animal Upon Animal will be available this holiday season and until supplies last.

  • Also of note:

Haba will be releasing two new games in their My Very First Line which is geared towards 2-3 year-olds (see pictures below)
